Task 2 will take care of common tools and functions. Observatoire de Paris will upgrade the user interface and registry of data services from FP7, which are the core of the system, and will supervise the evolution of current tools. The Planetary Science VO uses mainly tools from the Astronomy VO and maintained independently, to minimize new developments. Planetary Science-specific functions need to be implemented however, e.g., to support coordinate systems, or observations in reflected light. Whenever possible, the original developers of existing tools are associated to this effort: CNRS (CDS/Strasbourg) for Aladin, CNRS(IRAP/Toulouse) for CASSIS and AMDA, GFI Informatique for 3Dview. Smaller tasks on TOPCAT and DaCHS will be supervised by OBSPARIS in connection with their historical developers (Bristol and Heidelberg universities, not partners). Some of the key actors of the Astronomy VO in Europe are therefore beneficiaries or associated to the VESPA activity, and direct links to the FP7 programs EuroVO-ICE and CoSADIE exist. Additional, specific on-line services for processing of spectral observations will be implemented at OBSPARIS. UCL and OBSPARIS will study automated workflows to run processing pipelines in the future, and to integrate Europlanet with HELIO (HELiophysics Integrated Observatory) and VAMDC (Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre) services from FP7.
Although the roadmap for tools development is clearly identified, flexibility is required. While the private beneficiaries will work along specifications provided by the task leaders, academic partners are expected to be more responsive to user feedback, for instance. The deliveries will therefore include an incremental report. Results of these studies, and possibly reasons for changes, will be documented. Changes made for VESPA will be included in the next releases of the tools. An open source scheme will be favoured whenever possible.
